JPR's Graphics Market Index (GMI)
As most of you know, we are offering as part of our consulting
service a quarterly market survey named Market Watch. It will
cover the shipments of graphics chips and AIBs, market share data, historical
perspectives, company profiles (with financial data) and, of course,
market forecasts. The first edition will cover the periods of
Q3 and Q4 2001. Q1’02 data collection has also been started.
In addition to all that information, we have inaugurated
a stock index (GMI) that tracks 3Dlabs, ATI, Nvidia, Intel, Trident
and Via against the DJIA and the NASDAQ. We started the index on 2 July
01, normalizing everything to 1.00. The results are interesting and
show that for the period between 2 July 2001 and 8 February 2002 the
GMI group of companies greatly out performed the markets, as the following
diagram illustrates. However, when we added the Taiwanese and European
companies to the mix we see that the average goes down quite a
bit.
Surprisingly, the US-based graphics companies have outperformed the
Dow Jones Index and Nasdaq. However, our JPR world index comes down with
the addition of struggling companies in Europe and Asia.
In the quarterly Market Watch report, we will show the individual companies performance as well.
