Conference Agenda

8:30-8:35 Introduction
8:35 - 9:05 Keynote - A vision of the TV set in 2010 and beyond
Nikhil Balram, Marvell Semiconductors
The dramatic and rapid commodization of the DVD player market taught the CE industry to never again allow a large consumer electronics category to stagnate in the eyes of the consumer. The result has been an endless stream of innovation that continues to make each generation of device significantly "better" for the consumer in some clearly articulated way. This has been particularly true for the TV set, where over the last few years we have seen the coming of 1080p, 120Hz, wide-colour-gamut, dimming backlight, and network connectivity. This fast pace of innovation appears to be here to stay and the next 5 years promise to produce a television that bears little resemblance to the simple flat panel TVs that arrived in the market at the start of the decade. The speaker will peer into his muddy crystal ball and provide a vision of what the TV set might look like in 2010 and beyond.
9:05 - 9:35 TV semiconductor market forecast, status and trends
Henry Choy, Jon Peddie Research
Is the TV IC market just a commodity now or is the demise more fiction than fact? How are the regional difference really affecting the overall TV IC market? Is integration the only game or are there segments that needs a different approach?
9:35 - 10:05 HDTV: Still only an infant
Mark Fihn, Veritas et Visus
For the better part of 75 years, analog and CRT-based television dominated the world of home video entertainment. Spurred by government mandate and newer display technologies, the past 5 years has seen a massive switch to high definition digital TV. While many argue that this transition to HDTV is an endgame that will extend for several decades, this talk will expose realities that suggest HDTV is still very much in its infancy and that we will witness massive changes in home entertainment in the years to come. With a view to the future, this talk will take a pragmatic look at current market trends in terms of TV technology, ongoing standards battles, environmental activism, higher and higher display-related performance levels, 3DTV, and the ongoing question of convergence between the CE/PC industries.
10:05 - 10:35 TV influences
Henry Choy, Jon Peddie Research
A survey of some of the current new trends that will influence the future of TV's in the U.S. This includes interactive TV, networked TV, user generated content (UGC), peer to peer networks, advertising. The attendee will definitely leave with a much better view of the possibilities of the future of TV.

Panel Session: Worldwide digital conversion.
Moderator: Henry Choy
Panelist: Keith Potter, Wim Renirie, John Tryhub

The terrestial digital rollover in the U.S. is well on the way. What will happen in other parts of the world where conversion is more complex. How will Europe transition to digital and when will they convert to HD? How has the 2008 Olympics accelerated the rollover in Mainland China.

Hear the leading companies on future view improvements and what architecture changes will be ahead. Improving features are increasing demands on bandwidth and processing power. What are some of the changes ahead that a TV manufacturer must know about? Can they design a chassis that is indeed a worldwide platform?
14:25 - 14:55 Panel Session: Audio advancements and key challenges.
Moderator: Jon Peddie
Panelist: Skip Talyor, David Grant
As flat-panel TV manufacturers struggle to maintain their margins, audio features, such as Dolby Volume and SRS Lab's Volume IQ, have emerged as key differentiators. And with the high-def DVD format war now over, HD audio decoding is being pushed downstream to home theater products like AVRs and soundbars via HDMI. In this session, learn how audio is now one of the last key differentiators in HDTV that can help drive new revenue opportunities while finally delivering a great audio experience for consumers.
14:55 - 15:45 Panel Session: Software in TV's.
Moderator: Kathleen Maher

Panelist: Gareth Vaughn, Hiten Patel, Mike Harris, Jeff Allen
Analog TV's have a small component of software in the past. The complexity of the TV's has been growing where software is now a key compenent to the TV. The software stack for the various digital standards, firmware updates, user interfaces, testing and TV applications are all important pieces of the TV's. Come hear the leading SW companies that are providing solutions for the TV's talk about challenges and value added features that software can provide to the TV.
