The new chip operates in a more energy efficient way, said analyst Jon Peddie of market researcher Jon Peddie Research. The 48-core chip operates on as little as 25 watts, which is typical for a lot of laptop computers. It operates at 125 watts when at maximum performance. The chip is more power efficient in part because it has 24 sections, each of which can operate at a different speed, and there are eight sections operating at different voltages.

The first of the netbooks to hit the market were underpowered when it came to decoding most video, especially if that video was in HD resolution. This left users frustrated with choppy video playback or the outright inability to play some videos. Analyst Jon Peddie said, "ASUS is a leader in small form factor PCs, and this step shows that they are aware of the importance of great graphics, even for netbooks and nettops. These PCs will run circles around most Atom-based systems, so they are an excellent solution."

To project stereoscopic 3-D images, a TV or monitor needs to have a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz, notes Jon Peddie president of Jon Peddie Research. While new televisions typically can do that, few older ones can, he said. So most consumers will need to buy a new TV or computer monitor to watch 3-D programming, and many may be reluctant to go through the upgrade cycle in the near future after recently replacing their old analog TVs with digital ones. "That'll be a barrier," Peddie acknowledges.
