Dell launches big screen laptops for gaming and road warriors

Alienware x17 and a new 15-inch XPS

Posted: 06.30.21

Dell just launched a dozen new notebooks. How they did that when everyone was home watching TV and eating Doritos is a mystery. We picked two to tell you about because they seemed exceptional—the new 17-inch Alienware and the new 15-inch XPS.

The bezel is so thin on the XPS 15, you have to look for it.

The new XPS has an Eyesafe display and a 3.5k (3840 × 1890) OLED display option with a 15.6-inch, 16:10, four-sided InfinityEdge display. The larger display has a 92.9% screen-to-body ratio with a 100% DCI P3 color gamut and a 100,000:1 contrast ratio. As tight as it all is Dell even managed to squeeze in some impressive speakers. Machined up firing quad-speaker design and the first-ever 15-inch laptop featuring Waves Nx 3D audio for speakers.

The XPS 15 can be fitted with a 45W 11th Gen Intel Core processors up to i9 and next-gen graphics up to Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. Up to 55W of power in an 18-mm thin design. Prices starting at $1249.99.

Game on

Alienware has an industry-first, exclusive Element 31 thermal interface material made of a Gallium-Silicone matrix that delivers a 25% improvement in thermal resistance over the previous generation. It’s exclusively on configurations based on Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 and 3080.

The Alienware x17 comes with ComfortView Plus, hardware-based low blue light technology that does not degrade picture quality for the FHD 165 Hz panel or FHD 360 Hz panel. If FHD isn’t enough (and, when is it?), gamers interested in a UHD-4K panel can get 100% Adobe color gamut and 500-nits brightness. A 360-Hz panel option will be made available in July. It also supports Windows Hello with an IR camera for facial biometrics. The x17 starting price is $2,099.99.
