Coral NPU goes open source

Google hopes to prevent fragmentation of AI IoT.

Jon Peddie

Google Research released its open-source Coral NPU IP (previously code-named “Kelvin”) to accelerate edge AI deployment and reduce ecosystem fragmentation while enhancing security. Synaptics has already integrated the Coral NPU into its Astra SL2610 series of IoT SoCs. The architecture unifies three processor components—matrix, vector, and scalar—to deliver efficient on-device inference under tight power budgets. The design directly tackles performance constraints, software fragmentation, and trust challenges in edge AI platforms. By sharing the full platform—including binary builds, simulator, and toolchains—Google enables silicon vendors, service providers, and developers to build on a common foundation and speed innovation in ultra-low-power wearable and
