Fujitsu joins the AIP crowd with an NPU

Targeted at inference servers using advanced Japanese semi production.

Jon Peddie

Japan is seriously investing in AI silicon. Fujitsu is developing a domestic NPU—a chip purpose-built for AI inference—using a 1.4 nm process fabricated by Rapidus, Japan’s homegrown advanced semiconductor foundry. The Japanese government will fund roughly two-thirds of the ¥58 billion (US $363 million) development cost through NEDO. The project pairs Fujitsu’s NPU with its own CPUs in a single package, targeting servers rather than consumer devices. This is Japan’s most concrete move yet toward sovereign AI infrastructure. Fujitsu and Rapidus target sovereign AI silicon—I can almost see it, can you see it? (JPR AI) Fujitsu is developing a domestic
