IBM’s latest AI processor is GPU-free

It does have 32 NPUs, however.

Jon Peddie

IBM’s Spyre AI SoC is a purpose‑built NPU AIB rather than a downsized GPU. It fits into IBM Z, LinuxONE, and Power11 systems as a 75 W single‑slot PCIe accelerator, so every design choice follows that constraint and enterprise context. Over eight years, IBM iterated through five chip generations to reach a 32‑core NPU with 128 GB LPDDR5, a dual‑loop power controller, and strong multi‑card scaling. The result targets reliable, predictable AI inference inside mainframes and Power servers. IBM aimed Spyre at mainframe and Power customers that run mission‑critical transaction workloads and now want integrated AI inference. Large banks, insurers,
