AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series put to the test in VFX workflow

Analysis of Foundry Nuke’s performance.

Hernan Quijano

Jon Peddie Research (JPR) authored a white paper, sponsored by Lenovo, that evaluates the performance impact of the AMD Ryzen  Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series processors on Foundry’s Nuke 16. Digital compositing workflows in high-end film and television production demand a complex balance between high-frequency per-core performance for interactivity and massive multi-core parallelism for render outputs.

Using the real-world workloads on PxF Nukebench benchmark, JPR independently tested the Lenovo ThinkStation P8 across a range of AMD processor configurations, from 12 to 96 cores. Key findings include significant performance gains, record-breaking results, Return on Investment (ROI) and user productivity analysis, and technical optimizations.

Lenovo-AMD setup

What is the fastest processor (CPU) in the world for Foundry’s Nuke? During JPR reviewer and analyst Hernan Quijano’s research on the hardware requirements and performance analysis of Nuke, he noticed that the latest processors were not yet included in the performance benchmark database that Nuke users rely on, so he made a call to the industry and AMD immediately saw the value of showing what the complete product line of AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9000WX series can do for VFX artists.

So, he and JPR partnered with Lenovo Workstations and got to work, running PxF Nukebench on Lenovo ThinkStation P8 Workstations.

After months of work, the results are ready to be shared. The infographic, available here, contains highlights regarding the performance, impact on user productivity, and ROI of these amazing workstations with each CPU. There’s also a white paper with all the details, methodology, and companion data spreadsheet

Highlights:

Nuke users: What is your PxF Nukebench score? Can you beat our scores? We challenge you to run it, compare it to our results, and see what you could gain by upgrading your workstation to the latest CPU generation available at PxF Nukebench.
