The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced six areas of focus that will be investigated for consideration in the lead-up to the upcoming SciTech Awards. The awards presentation will be held in late April 2026.

In June, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a call for submissions for this year’s Scientific and Technical Awards honoring individuals and companies whose discoveries and innovations have contributed in significant and lasting ways to motion pictures. As is customary, the Academy has narrowed its focus following that call, and is now investigating six areas for awards consideration.

As such, the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Committee has started investigations into the following areas:
• Small pyrotechnic devices that are safe to use in proximity to cast and crew
• Layered shading systems for computer-generated imagery
• Software suites for stop-motion photography
• Systems for custom art styles in animated features
• Automated speech restoration tools
• Conform management and sound auto-assembly software

According to the Academy, the point of making these investigations public is so individuals and companies with devices or claims of innovation within these areas can submit their achievements for review.

The deadline to submit additional entries is Monday, September 8, at 5 pm PT.  For more information on these awards or to submit a similar technology, click here.

After thorough investigations in each technology category, the committee will meet to vote on recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Governors, which will make the final awards decisions.

The Scientific and Technical Awards presentation will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
