Jon Peddie Research has just released its annual GPU developments report. It is a summary of GPU developments for 2021 and includes announcements by the leading GPU suppliers. Although we think it is through, we do not claim it to be exhaustive of every announcement made by the suppliers.

The information is presented in chronological order, by quarter.

The GPU market is, has been, and probably always will be a dynamic segment frequently disturbed with surprises. Some of the disturbances in 2021 were:

AMD introduced an additional RDNA2 GPU product line, putting AMD back in the high-end segment.

Intel continued to reveal portions of its Xe design and named the first products which are expected in 2022.

Nvidia rolled out additional versions of its Ampere GPU.

Qualcomm announced four new SoCs with new GPUs during the year

Arm announced two new designs and so did Imagination Technologies.

Apple surprised a few people with their new SoC and GPU announcements.

New GPU architectures were proposed, and a few new companies have declared their intentions.

The number of GPU suppliers increased to 18, however, we think the number of GPU suppliers will reach 20 in 2022.

The GPU is ubiquitous and can be found in almost every device and system imaginable. Some of the developments and associated events are in this report—may the GPU be with you.
