DOOM and id Software have made their mark in the first-person shooter genre over the years. Now comes their latest installment: DOOM: The Dark Ages. As the title indicates, The Dark Ages takes on a medieval theme in what is more than a proving ground that war is hell—in this game, it is a war against hell.

JPR’s sister site BabelTechReviews (BTR) describes the game as a bold prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM: Eternal but steps away from sleek Martian tech and plunges headlong into brutal medieval fantasy. In the review, BTR contends that is a gamble that mostly pays off—blending relentless combat, intricate level design, a grim fantasy aesthetic, and revolutionary id Tech 8 graphics.
“With an emphasis on tactile brutality, shield-and-flail mechanics, and Siege-era warfare, The Dark Ages aims to build a bridge between the Slayer’s mythological origin and the high-octane arena blasting of modern DOOM,” the reviewer states.
In its technical assessment, BTR details the benchmarks used as it puts the game through its paces as well as the results.
