AMD agreed to acquire Taalas, a Toronto start-up that fixes trained AI models directly into silicon instead of running them on programmable chips. The deal adds a specialized inference chip to AMD’s lineup alongside Instinct GPUs, Epyc CPUs, and ROCm software. Taalas built its first chip around one model, Llama 3.1-8B, and reports strong token throughput per user.
