While the expected return to the theater did not reap the results the movie industry was hoping for, there were some films that helped drive its rather lackluster ticket sales. These, of course, were the films that “had to be seen on the big screen” to truly appreciate. Not much of a surprise that, for the most part, they are the biggest VFX extravaganzas of the year. First, let’s look at the films that made the Academy Award’s 2022 shortlist for Best Visual Effects, as selected by the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee this week.
