Anthropic is in talks with Microsoft to adopt its Maia 200 custom AI chip—one node in a multi-silicon strategy that now spans Nvidia GPUs, AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and a $15 billion-per-year compute deal with xAI’s Colossus superclusters. At that spending level, a 10% hardware inefficiency costs $1.5 billion annually. For CIOs tracking AI infrastructure economics, Anthropic’s stack is the clearest live demonstration that silicon efficiency has become a core financial discipline, not an infrastructure footnote.
