Bitfury AI merged with IBM Zurich and ETH Zurich researchers in June 2021 to form Axelera AI, securing €10 million (US $11.8 million) in seed funding, followed by another €12 million (US $14.1 million). In October 2022, they closed a $27 million series A round, raising $120 million total by March. Axelera AI launched its Metis AI platform in December 2022, attracting new investors and customers. The Metis AIPU, a quad-core NPU, delivers up to 214 TOPS (int8) for edge AI inference, utilizing digital in-memory computing (DIMC) below 10W.
