HP, Huawei, and Wi-Fi’s patent layer

Cross-license shows standards IP at work.

HP’s new Wi-Fi patent cross-license with Huawei does not signal a procurement shift or a broader commercial partnership. It reflects the licensing mechanics of Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7, where standard-essential patents sit beneath every compliant device. For CIOs, ISVs, and silicon teams, the agreement highlights a practical reality: selecting a US Wi-Fi chip supplier does not remove product-level intellectual-property obligations. The deal also gives a geopolitical story a useful technical frame. HP has signed a multiyear global cross-license with Huawei covering Wi-Fi technology, including Wi-Fi 7. The agreement gives each company access to specified patents held by the other.
