Semiconductor companies’ R&D and inventories

Apple leads on R&D investments, Intel on ratio.

Apple spent $7.9 billion on R&D in Q1’24, 70% of the total spent by AMD, Intel, Marvell, Nvidia, and Qualcomm combined. Intel spent $4.38 billion. Marvell had the highest R&D-to-sales ratio at 41%, followed by Intel at 43%. Inventory levels fluctuated widely during the pandemic, impacting company balance sheets and remaining open to interpretation. We look at AMD, Apple, Intel, Marvell, Nvidia, and Qualcomm’s quarterly R&D and inventory levels compared to their sales.
