SPEC just gave GPU vendors and CAD professionals a new way to put their own work to the test. The organization released a Workload Development Kit for its SPECapc for Siemens NX 2024 benchmark, letting users run and measure their own GPU-specific workloads and proprietary graphics models beyond the standard test scenes. It adds no new AI capability. It simply opens the benchmark to custom content while keeping proprietary data private and baseline scoring intact for every SPECapc licensee.

The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) released the SPECapc for Siemens NX 2024 Workload Development Kit (WDK) on August 18, 2026, from its Gainesville, Virginia, headquarters. The WDK integrates directly into the existing SPECapc for Siemens NX 2024 benchmark. This version does not add new AI features. The kit basically lets vendors and consumers run and measure their own GPU-specific workloads and proprietary graphics models within the existing benchmark framework.
Siemens NX combines CAD and CAM tools into processor-intensive software that designers and manufacturers use to build products faster. The base SPECapc benchmark runs graphics tests covering rotation, pan, zoom, and clipping for each model, and its viewport tests measure field-of-view handling and feature-regeneration operations. Professionals, students, artists, hardware developers, and vendors run these tests to see how different hardware configurations affect real application performance.
The WDK extends that framework to internal models and specialized workflows. Vendors and consumers can benchmark proprietary graphics models without exposing that intellectual property outside their own environment. Teams that previously relied only on published SPECapc scores now gain a sanctioned method to test the exact scenes, assemblies, and rendering paths their own products use in daily production work.
SPECapc Chair Jessica Heerboth said the addition gives users the flexibility and framework to gain insight into workloads that matter to them, and called it another way SPEC responds to the needs of its user communities.
The WDK functions as a parallel customization layer. It leaves the base benchmark and its baseline scoring untouched, so existing comparisons and published results remain valid. Current licensees gain access immediately: they download and reinstall the updated benchmark package to activate the WDK alongside their existing SPECapc for Siemens NX 2024 installation, and they need no separate purchase.
SPEC operates as a non-profit organization that establishes, maintains, and endorses standardized benchmarks and tools for evaluating the performance of computing systems. Its membership includes more than 120 computer hardware and software vendors, educational institutions, research organizations, and government agencies worldwide. The organization coordinates member input to define shared measurement standards for the industry, keeping vendor-reported numbers comparable across the market.
This release signals a shift toward benchmarking as an extensible platform. Hardware vendors validating GPUs for CAD and CAM workloads gain a sanctioned path to test their own proprietary content under the same standardized conditions the industry already trusts for public SPECapc scores, without publishing that content or compromising the integrity of the baseline benchmark.
The release matters for teams that design and validate GPUs against CAD and CAM software. It gives them a standardized, secure way to prove performance on their own content beyond SPEC’s published test scenes, without requiring a new purchase or disrupting existing benchmark comparisons.
What do we think?
SPEC extended an established benchmark without replacing it. This choice keeps existing SPECapc scores comparable while opening room for proprietary testing. The approach protects intellectual property and gives hardware vendors a credible internal validation tool. Adoption will depend on how many vendors build custom workloads into their qualification process. This move strengthens SPEC’s benchmark franchise more than it changes the GPU landscape.
Inflection point: The WDK adds no new AI capability. Its significance sits elsewhere: standardized, secure custom-workload testing signals a broader inflection point in benchmarking methodology as GPUs increasingly power CAD workflows and machine learning pipelines on the same silicon. Enterprises now hold a validated framework for measuring proprietary graphics and compute workloads without disclosure risk. That shift matters as AI-adjacent hardware absorbs more of the design-software computing budget, marking a genuine inflection point that other benchmark bodies will likely follow.
